Will's comments are right on. We need increased religious education in the U.S. so that students are better prepared to deal with disparate peoples they encounter in our increasingly globalized, hyper-interconnected world. Will's ideas can be implemented through educational legislation passed by the House, Senate and local government to increase the time spent on teaching about other religions. Such change can be achieved by lobbying politicians and creating grassroots movements focused specifically on education.
One question it would be interesting to address, however, is what fuels radicalism? The reason the question is so fascinating is because many believe that if we can understand the root reason people become radicalized we can work to prevent such radicalization in the future, even if we might not be able to affect change in those who have taken the path of extremism.
Scholars, of course, have written extensively on this very question and the answers provided range from discontent with encroachment of Western, materialistic ideals into Muslim countries, to frustration centering around the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict, to desperation in light of living in societies where jobs are scarce and living conditions poor, to extreme religious indoctrination from a young age.
One of the great questions which fascinates me is whether true economic investment in the Middle East could prevent individuals from joining the likes of organizations like Al-Qaeda, or whether such a proposal is merely wishful thinking and other solutions must be pursued. I do believe, as do many others, that economic prosperity is often the catalyst for moderation and avoiding violence.
The idea would be to provide vast aid to Muslim countries--a Marshall plan of sorts--to help them build up extensive infrastructure, thus providing jobs to the people on the ground, leaving less time for radicalism. This would not be money provided with democratic strings attached. We would not attempt to tell these countries how they should be run, but rather provide detailed plans on how infrastructure and jobs could be created, hopefully creating an economic incentive to eschew terrorism and extremism, as people would be more involved with working in building up their own countries.
Do you think such a plan could work or is even necessary? Why do you believe people join extremist organizations like Al-Qaeda and how do you think we can work to prevent such affiliations in the future? What do you believe it would take for people in the Muslim world to change their perceptions of the United States?

Steven, I truely agree with you that the solution to extreamism is economical. However, I am not sure that a Mid-East Marshall plan would work out. I'm not sure if the middle eastern governments would use the money for its assigned purpose. I mean, does the Saudi government really need more money? I think the Saudi family should just invest some of their wealth back into the country, a country which has produced its fair share of extreamists (most notable the 9/11 hijackers.) I just have a bad feeling that if money was given directly to the states, it would never find its way to the bottom rings of society. If anything, this could result in a violent back lash against the arab governments by their respective populations. I could be wrong though, feel free to explain if you think I am.
Forbidden:
"And slay not the soul which God has forbidden except for the just cause..." (Koran 17:33)
"...If anyone killed a person not in retaliation for murder or to spread mischief in the land, it would be as if he killed the whole of mankind. And if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the whole of mankind" (Surah Al-Maaida 5:32)
"Fight for the sake of Allah those that fight against you, but do not attack them first. Allah does not love the aggressors." (Koran 2:190)

Murder is listed right alongside sins like sorcery, fornication, robbery.
"Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings..." (Galatians 5:21)

"...murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars..." (Revelation 21:8)
On Violence:
God destroyed the earth with a flood because of the extent violence had spread:
"...the earth was filled with violence... Then God said to Noah, 'The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence... behold, I am about to destroy them...'" (Genesis 6:13).
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you in order that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven..." (Matthew 5:43, 45)

Allah himself is really the one slaying them:
"It is not us who slay them but Allah, in order that He might test the Believers by a gracious trial from Himself." (Koran 8:17; cp. Surah Al-Baqarah 2:190)
Allah "will punish them by our hands..." (Koran 9:14).
Jihad is mandatory.
"Unless we go forth, (for Jihad) He will punish us with a grievous penalty, and put others in our place" (Koran 9:38-39).
"And what is the matter with you that you do not fight in the cause of Allah and for those weak, ill treated and oppressed among men, women and children whose only cry is; 'Our Lord, rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors..." (Surah An-Nisa 4:75)
"Believers, when you encounter the armies of the infidels do not turn your backs to them in flight. If anyone on that day turns his back to them, except it be for tactical reasons, or to join another band he shall incur the wrath of Allah and Hell shall be his home: an evil fate." (Koran 8:12-17)
"The recompense for an injury is an injury equal thereto (in degree): but if a person forgives and make reconciliation his reward is due from Allah: For (Allah) loves not those who do wrong." (Koran 42:40)
"You have heard it said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. But I say unto you, do not resist him who is evil; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. (Matthew 5:38, 39)"
It is acceptable to break treaties and obligations with pagans and make war on them whenever strong enough to do so (Koran 9:3).
Treachery and lying are forbidden. (Matthew 5:33-37) Better to suffer wrong than not to keep one's word. (Proverbs)
